A new school year calls for a new work out regimen. But before you squander even more time deciding where to work out, here are some fitness classes I have tried, loved, and recommend. (You can trust me, I’m a Syracuse native who has gotten down and sweaty in a few different places.)
East Area Family YMCA: This will only work if you have a car, but the YMCA in Fayetteville is the perfect place for people who like to try a little bit of everything. With an extensive cycling schedule and classes ranging from Zumba Aquatics to TurboKick Kickboxing, you won’t get bored. The best part? A student membership is only $30.50 a month. Click here for full schedules and membership information.
Strength In Motion: This gym is a little more intense … and pricey. Geared toward the athlete, Strength In Motion will make you feel like you’re back in high school and taking a preseason fitness test. The coaches are excellent and double as nutrition counselors. Click here for more information.
O Yoga Studio: Everyone can use some yoga in their life, and O Yoga Studio is one of the best places to do it in Syracuse. Students get a 15% discount and the schedule is fairly sizable. My personal favorite class is the Vinyasa HipHop Flow, but regular Vinyasa, hot yoga, and a range of other classes are also offered. Click here for weekly schedules and rates.
Recreation Services at SU: Already taken all the PED credits you’re allowed? No worries — Recreation Services offers a range of classes at Flanagan, Ernie Davis, and Archbold gyms. Ranging from $30 to $100 per semester for students, classes run from now until December 6. I’m partial to the Pilates class, but you can mix it up and try fencing, CrossFit, tai chi, and more.
