Sometimes after a long night of studying, all you want to do is to eat a late-night snack. The vending machine might be your closest option, but be careful not to fall into a trap. Choose a healthy snack so that your body doesn’t crash from a sugar rush later on. Snacks from the vending machine could have as much fat as an entire meal, so choosing the healthiest option is definitely vital.
Here are some tips to help you choose:
1. As far as chips go, you might be tempted to go for the Sun Chips, but Baked Lays are the healthier choice. Sun Chips are 10 grams more fattening than Lays and also have 110 more calories. Though they are low in saturated fat, Sun Chips aren’t the best food when studying.
2. If a snack with fruit is an option, and I don’t mean artificial flavoring, always choose it. For example, Fat-Free Fig Newtons have less saturated fat than crackers. If you can get organic fig newtons from somewhere else, like Trader Joe’s, without the processed sugar, that’s even better.
3. When choosing between Wheat Thins and Nature Valley granola bars, both of which seem healthy, the Nature Valley’s are actually healthier because they contain whole grains, which are beneficial for reducing cholesterol.
4. Pop Tarts may be tempting, but stay away from them. While they might not seem as bad as a chocolate bar, they are actually calorie packed, with approximately 400 calories per serving.
Weigh your options the next time you find yourself staring at the vending machine, and be sure to fight those cravings for unhealthy snacks.
