It seems almost impossible to maintain a healthy diet while in college. Whether it’s processed dining hall food or Domino’s at 2 a.m., there is always that greasy temptation waiting at every meal.
Even more difficult can be trying to manage a vegetarian or vegan diet while in school. When your friends want to go out to dinner or order food, your options can be very limited – and meals can leave you feeling less than full.
Well, I have a solution to the problem: If you’re trying to eat healthy, or want to find a great vegan meal, head on over to 719 East Genesee Street and check out Strong Hearts Cafe. This 100% vegan restaurant offers everything from salads to sandwiches to desserts, all at great prices.
I have a confession: I am not a vegan or a vegetarian. Nonetheless, I can honestly say that Strong Hearts’ menu appeals to anyone who enjoys healthy, feel-good food. The highlight of the menu is not their salads or sandwiches; it is their amazing milkshakes. Yes, you heard me right – vegan milkshakes.
I can promise that you will not find a more extensive variety of milkshakes at any other food venue. S’mores, Pumpkin and Espresso, Oreo Cookies and Cream – Strong Hearts offers delicious flavors that will satisfy vegans and non-vegans alike. Plus, each milkshake is named after people who inspire the Strong Hearts’ employees. Personally, I like to go with the Jill Phipps (Peanut Butter and Banana) or the Malcom X (Chocolate and Cherry).
Strong Hearts also has a great dessert menu, complete with cupcakes, cookies and whoopie pies to satisfy your sweet tooth.
What else is on the menu?
Aside from the treats Strong Hearts’ offers, their menu also includes hearty eats for every meal. They serve breakfast all day, including pancakes, spicy tofu scramble, and soy sausage links. Be sure to try their original “egg” trick muffin: spiced tofu, soy sausage patty and melted vegan cheese on an english muffin.
For lunch or dinner, customers can choose from various soups, salads or sandwiches. The grilled cheese is a popular item, made with vegan cheese and tomato, and the BLT with soy bacon is delicious as well. Their best-selling sandwich, according to their menu, is the “chicken” salad sandwich, made with soy chicken and vegan mayo.
If you want a particularly special menu item, be sure to visit Strong Hearts Friday nights between 6 p.m. and 2 a.m. That’s when they serve a variety of different vegan pizzas, offering customers the decision to design their own custom pie.
Hours and Prices
Strong Hearts is open 7 days a week, most days until midnight. Their prices are extremely reasonable: salads are $5-$7, while sandwiches can range from $4.50 to $7.50. Milkshakes are either $4.60 or $5. For a complete list of menu options, as well as hours, visit their website at www.strongheartscafe.com.
Unfortunately, Strong Hearts will be closed for two weeks due to remodeling starting October 28th. So, if you want to try out their great vegan eats for yourself, visit soon!
