Four Things You Might Not Know About Citrus Fruits

What do we really know about citrus fruits? Here are four things you should know about those lemons, limes, and, of course, oranges.

1. Lemon juice cures hangovers. Yes, it’s true. Lemon juice has been known to help those painful migraines that come the morning after. How? Well, scientists have found that low blood sugar is one of the main causes of that terrible feeling. Consumption of fruits and their juices has been known to lessen the intensity of a hangover thanks to the fructose in them. Also, the juice changes your PH levels by making the body more alkaline, which also eases symptoms! Yay!

2. Anemia, be gone. Struggling with getting enough iron? This can lead to fatigue, heart palpitations, and even shortness of breath. Have no fear, citrus is here! The Vitamin C found in many citrus fruits can help your body absorb iron, and consuming it along with iron supplements can increase that absorption by two to four times. Vegetarians, look no further!

3. Hello, healthy immune system. Once again, the Vitamin C in citrus fruits is an antioxidant that fights free radicals in the body, keeping your immune system strong and also reducing your risk of cancer. Only one orange a day gives you your full daily allowance of the stuff. Go orange!

4. They’re heart-healthy, too. Yep, that’s right. These beloved (and tasty) fruits contain phytonutrients that can lower your blood pressure and reduce your risk of heart disease down the road. These phytonutrients can lower your level of bad cholesterol and reduce inflammation in the arteries, too. However, these wonder nutrients can only be found in the pulp of the fruit, so eat the fruit, and skip the juice!
