College is supposed to be the best four years of your life, so why not love every minute of it?
Especially entering college, deciding to continue a high school relationship is not always an easy one. While part of you may want to hold onto your significant other, there’s always the fear of missing the opportunity to meet someone else. Since you are entering a new phase in your life, your changing perspective and events in college may begin to separate the two of you. But if you do want to maintain this relationship, you have to learn to make a long distance relationship work. This isn’t impossible; you just have to know its what you want.
As you enter this new chapter of your life, everything begins to change. In order to successfully maintain a long distance relationship in college, the two of you have to have open communication. Even though being in constant communication with one another may no longer be a viable option, set up a definitive time once a week to talk. Whether it’s through Skype or a phone call, being able to sit down once a week to catch each other up on your week is crucial. Allowing your boyfriend or girlfriend to be part of your new life will help you strike the balance between home and school life.
The number one thing to remember about maintaining a long distance relationship is honesty: being open with your partner and remaining true to yourself. If there are moments of doubt, express them. You never want to feel trapped, or left with the burning feelings of a diminishing relationship. Sometimes you may need to step back and reevaluate the situation, understanding you have to make the decision that’s best for you. You both deserve to be happy; so don’t let the past hold you back from discovering something you may be missing.
Long distance relationships are never easy, but learning to make them work is key. By being honest to yourself and to your partner, this transition will become easier. While at times things may become difficult, your overall respect and love for each other will help you overcome any obstacle you may face.
