Delivering the latest buzz on fitness, nutrition and wellness for Syracuse University students.
The weather is slowly getting warmer and campus is buzzing with activity, especially in the gym. Students are shaping up for the summer. Toning up is great, but what you eat is more important. Fresh produce is the best way to trim calories from your diet and you won’t have to worry about portion control. Fuel up on these foods to get ready for summer!
Cold soups like gazpacho or cucumber-dill are great low-calorie dishes that are a great start to any meal. Watermelon is another great choice. Half of a watermelon is water and it’s a great way to stay hydrated. Reach for this fruit instead of a sugary popsicle.
Grilled vegetables are a mainstay in the summer and can be used to prepare a variety of dishes. Have grilled onions, bell peppers, carrots, eggplant, zucchini, garlic and asparagus in your fridge on hand. Add to pasta, salads and pitas for a refreshing meal or snack. Salads make for healthy, wholesome meals with little preparation required. Season with herbs instead of a heavy dressing.
Finally, stay away from the ice cream man! The music from the truck is irresistible, but it is important to resist temptation. Skip the dippin-dots and opt for frozen fruit instead. Grilling fruit is another alternative. Your sweet tooth will thank you!
