Exome sequencing, a new technology that has led researchers to identify mutations in three new genes that may be linked with autism. The mutations in children seem to result from issues in the production of the sperm or egg. These new findings make researchers hopeful that 50 percent of autism-related gene mutations will be identified within three years. The Choosing Wisely project, a campaign that asked doctors to identify tests that are overused or unnecessary. Often, stress tests, X-rays and bone density scans are not necessary for healthy patients. The excessive procedures are expensive and come with possible risks. Spicy tuna rolls, which may be the cause of 90 cases of salmonella in the United States. People in 19 different states and Washington D.C. have come down with the illness. The FDA is investigating the cause of the outbreak after an internal memo was accidently sent to everyone in the FDA. Spicy tuna rolls are suspected to be the cause, but no official announcement has been made. Trans fats, which, when consumed in high amounts, may be linked to depression. One study found that people who eat more trans fats are at a higher risk for depression than people who eat few trans fats. Studies have found people who suffer from depression have high levels of inflammation, and trans fats cause similar inflammation in the heart and brain.
